CANMORE, Alta.— Biathlon Canada strengthened its leadership and governance after electing a new Board of Directors that brings together decades of experience across high-performance sport, athlete leadership, governance, business, military sport and grassroots development, helping to position the organization for continued growth and success across the Canadian biathlon community.

New tools give clubs and coaches greater support to introduce more Canadian youth to biathlon and help develop fundamental skills

Biathlon Canada would like to inform the community of two changes to the 2026-2027 domestic competition calendar. Given that U Sports is still working with FISU organizers on finding an alternative competition opportunity for biathlon, we have decided to move FISU trials to Canmore on November 28 and 29. The selection event will coincide with Junior IBU Cup and Junior World Championships Trials 1. Vancouver Island Biathlon Club was originally slated to host Canadian Masters Championships. Weather experts are predicting that there will be little snow this season and organizers have made the difficult decision to rescind their bid. Fortunately, the Organizing Committee at Club de plein air Biathlon Estrie have agreed to host the event at La Patrie. The event will take place January 21 to 24.

Biathlon Canada has extended its relationships with three valued partners – Lapua, Roeckl, and USANA – who have been critical to supporting the pursuit of excellence for the nation’s top biathletes. Each of the partners have committed to supporting Biathlon Canada through the upcoming Olympic quadrennial.

Using infrared technology in place of traditional ammunition, electronic biathlon can be set up in a variety of venues, expanding where race opportunities can take place.

Through programming supported by the Community Sport for All initiative, Biathlon Canada is equipping clubs and partners with electronic biathlon systems that allow safe and inclusive delivery across a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities. Electronic biathlon is not only expanding access to the sport - it is also strengthening how it is delivered. Through programming supported by the Community Sport for All initiative, Biathlon Canada is equipping coaches with adaptable tools that support skill development, confidence building, and safe training environments. Electronic rifles allow coaches to introduce marksmanship fundamentals in settings that may not have traditional range access, while maintaining a strong focus on technique and progression.

Through programming supported by the Community Sport for All initiative, Biathlon Canada is expanding participation by reaching communities that have not traditionally engaged in biathlon. By using infrared electronic rifles, Biathlon Canada is making the sport more accessible in schools, community centres, and outdoor settings where traditional biathlon programming may not have been possible.

Biathlon Canada would like to update the community on its 2026-2027 domestic event schedule. Biathlon competitions were recently removed from the 2027 FISU program, and no further details have been released as to what event, if any, may replace it. As such, Biathlon Canada has made the decision to move the selection event for any FISU-related competition to November 3-7, 2026, which coincides with Biathlon Canada Sr. National Team Trials. It is with great sadness that Biathlon NB announces the passing of Ray Kokkonen June 12, 2025. He was deeply involved in the sport of Biathlon since 1967 as an athlete, coach, official and administrator. He took part in nine Olympic Games in an official capacity, including being the Biathlon Competition Chief in the 1988 Calgary Games. He served as the President and Board Chairman of Biathlon Canada for 14 years and later as the President of Biathlon NB for 20 years. Ray was a pillar of biathlon in Canada for decades and we offer our condolences to Ray's famly

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Paul Dorotich, a cherished member of the Canadian biathlon community and former Biathlon Canada staff member. Paul had a long and impactful career in the sport of biathlon and high-performance sport more broadly. He played an influential role in Biathlon Canada’s success from the 1990s through the mid-2000s, helping lay the foundation for future World Championship and Olympic achievements. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Paul’s family, friends, and colleagues.

Biathlon Canada is proud to announce Cathy Tong as our new High Performance and Operations Manager. Cathy has an impressive career path which reflects her ability to build and lead programs from grassroots to high performance levels. She has worked in sport at the local, provincial and NSO level with organizations like Swim Alberta, Winsport Academy and most recently she held the role of High Performance Director and 2022 Olympic team Lead for long track at Speed Skating Canada. Cathy also is experienced as a coach in figure skating and has done work facilitating the development of strategic plans with provincial organizations. Cathy's skills and qualifications paired with her experience in Canada's sport system will be a great asset to the Biathlon Canada team.

The North American Summer Biathlon Championships in Jericho, Vermont on August 2-4 have been identified as an IBU Regional Event. With assistance from a grant from the IBU, Biathlon Canada has a budget of up to $4000 to offer a travel subsidy to encourage U22 athletes to compete at this event. This past season one of our long time veteran athletes, Christian Gow, announced his retirement from biathlon. Christian is a 2-time Olympian, 2016 World Championship bronze medallist, and an 11 year National Team member with a biathlon career that spanned over 20 years. He has been a staple on the Canadian team and within international racing for many years, and he was an excellent role model for his teammates and all athletes across the country. Biathlon Canada, Nordiq Canada, Ski Jumping Canada and Nordic Combined Canada are working together on a joint outreach program to promote nordic sport in communities across the country called the Ski Playground Initiative. This past winter the initiative visited communities throughout the country to introduce youth and adults to one or all of the nordic disciplines, with an emphasis on exposure for minority groups.
